Hey, used to live in the South End, then Watertown, then outside Worcester, then kept moving west up to Vermont.

But I visited Boston last March and that familiar smell came rushing right back with memories.

I'd never want to live in a city again, but I miss Boston at times!

The Pan Mass Challenge

It started as a ride. It started as a way of remembering a mother or a sister. A father or a brother. A friend or someone they had just met. Less than 20 friends getting together to ride and remember someone that had succumbed to cancer. More than 20 years later and donations totaling over $100 million dollars, it has turned into an event. An event that celebrates those that have survived and for those that will.

We ride in remembrance. We ride for those not yet cured. Those that cannot say, "I am cancer free for one year, two years, three years". We ride for those not old enough to experience a Red Sox World Championship, or a Patriots Super Bowl victory. We ride for those that cannot understand why this has happened to them and for those that never had a chance to fight back. We ride for those who wait for a cure.

I am part of the PMC family – a unified force working toward a common goal. We’re athletes, weekend warriors, or (like myself) have little previous cycling experience. But we all have one thing in common - the commitment to helping others and being part of an effort much larger than ourselves.

I am part of the PMC family - and I need your help. I hate asking for money, so I won’t. Instead, I’m inviting you to a fundraiser.

Please join me in supporting this great cause.

Shimmies for a Cure – Part Deux
March 29, 2008
Somerville City Club
Somerville, MA 02143

A night a great dancing performed by some of New England’s favorite belly dancers.

$25 includes over 20 performers, hors dourves, a chocolate fountain with dipping delights, and non-alcoholic beverages.

There will be raffles, a silent auction, and vending.

The Somerville City Club is located close to Sullivan Square T stop and close to Route 93.

All proceeds from this fundraiser go to the Pan Mass Challenge.

It’s easy to purchase tickets:
Send checks made out to “PMC – The Jimmy Fund” to:
Rachel Gabriel
60 Burrage Street
Lunenburg, MA 01462

Or pay on-line at:

Operating on a non-capitalist, non-consumerist, non-competitive paradigm that I hope will help heal the planet I'm looking to network with folks, to extend an invitation to visit Bald Mountain Retreat (www.baldmountainretreat.com) as my guest. Like-minded people who appreciate rustic accommodations are welcome to come up at no charge. (Those who require a private room can inquire about those accommodations as well.)
We’re just being born and I’m looking for folks to come help manifest the vision. There is the opportunity to come stay with a retired naturopathic doctor in a truly amazing natural setting, secluded, idyllic, peaceful... Sharing is best.
Also, if you might like to lead a retreat, please contact me.
Thank you and you are welcome,

Moving to Boston

I'm planning on moving to Boston this coming summer. I lived there back in 92-93, and I know things have changed a lot. Back then, the reasonably priced rental housing for liberal folks was in JP and Somerville. I lived in Brookline, but over kinda behind Jamaica Pond, not in the rich part. Now I hear Mission Hill in Roxbury is a good place to live. I remember people saying not to go to Roxbury. What are your thoughts about good places to live in the Boston Metro area? I'm not yet sure where I'll be working, but what I'd like is to live near a T line or a good bus line, but I will also have to have a car for work, so if I have to pay for parking, then I'll have to add that into my rent. Any thoughts are welcome. I'm gonna repeat this question in a few other Boston tribes, so please forgive if you see if a few times. Thanks!

You Know You are A New Englander If....

Here is something for you guys...

If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping it will swim by, you might live in New England.

If you're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights eachyear because Mt. Washington is the coldest spot in the nation, and Boston gets more snow than any other major city in the US, you live in New England.

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from September through May, you live in New England.

If you instinctively walk like a penguin for six months out of the year, you live in New England.

If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance, and he doesn't work there, you live in New England.

If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you live in New England.

If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you live in New England.

And, you know you are a New Englander when: "Vacation" means going anywhere south of New York City for the weekend.

You measure distance in hours.

You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.

You have switched from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back again.

You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching.

You install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked.

You carry jumpers in your car and your girlfriend/wife knows how to use them.

You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

The speed limit on the highway is 55mph -- you're going 80 and everybody is passing you!

Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction.

Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.

You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

You find 10 degrees "a little chilly."

URGENT REPOST: FOSTER HOME NEEDED!!!!!

Hi everyone!

I am reposting this in the hope that someone may be able to help me and my gorgeous dog Socrates out. It's a big one ... I am moving back to Australia from Boston and want desperately to take my baby with me. However, all the quarantine places in Australia are filled up for the next 5-6 months. Since I can only legally (well, legally-esque - i think i'm already over my visa limitations) stay in america for another month, I cannot wait with him. So, I am hoping to find someone out there who loves animals and is willing to foster Socrates during the time it takes to secure him a spot in quarantine.

He is a beautiful fox terrier/beagle mix, with a truly old soul and the heart of an angel. He LOVES humans, and would bring so much love and affection to you. He's nearly 5, in good health, and I would of course provide a much remuneration as I possibly could, incl his food/vet bills.

It's a big ask, I know, but I have to try and believe that there is someone out there who may be able to help me and my beloved get through this. I've had him for a year, and cannot imagine my life without him. If you are interested, or know anyone who may be, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know asap! Thankyou!

Hoping and loving,
Lauren and Socrates

Howdy Friends. I work for Mad Science of Greater Boston where we provide fun science programming for children ages 5-12. We're currently facing a sever Mad Scientist shortage!

We have lots of positions available, it is VERY part time (it would be very difficult to pay your bills with this job, but it's great for extra cash), instructors must have their own car, and we provide all materials and training. We have the biggest need for people who have 2-5 afternoons free during the week. As an extra bonus, you get to work with ME!

I included our official posting below.
Thanks!
Katy with a Y

Flexible scheduling! Now hiring! Please visit www.madscience.org/greaterboston to fill out our online application!

Mad Science of Greater Boston is looking for enthusiastic people to teach our hands-on, interactive and FUN science programs for kids throughout the Boston area. We offer a variety of programs for elementary school age children including a large number of after school programs as well as workshops and birthday parties. All our programs are taught on location (where the kids are), and last approximately one hour. To teach after school programs, you should have availability at least 3 afternoons a week for a minimum of 3 hours before 5pm. Your total number of programs per week is based upon your individual availability and location. Most instructors can expect between 3 and 8 programs per week. There is also a weekly instructor meeting held at our office in Belmont. Training, class plans and materials are all provided!

If you say “Yes!” to any of the following questions, Mad Science may be for you!
- Are you looking for a FUN and engaging part-time job that can fit within your schedule?
- Do you have a morning or other part-time commitment and are looking for some additional work?
- Are you considering becoming a teacher (or are on your way) and need some more hands-on experience? A resume builder?
- Are you a student looking for a fun, exciting way to fill some of your non-class time?

Requirements:
- Our instructors travel to their programs, so you must own a car or have extremely reliable access to one
- You should have experience with children such as experience as a camp counselor, coach, after school program instructor, nanny, babysitter, educator or teacher etc.
- Outgoing and FUN personality!
- Lots of energy!

Compensation begins at $25 per program, and increases due to additional compensation for distant classes. Due to the recent rise in gasoline prices, a travel compensation program is also in place temporarily.

BIBLICAL use of MAGIC-MUSHROOMS.

MANNA AMBROSIA/SOMA/TEONANACATL
Hell-Low from Heaven-High; I am author/publisher of "MANNA" the book documenting the
BIBLICAL use of MAGIC-MUSHROOMS.
“Manna” Explores the evidence that Christ was the leader of a Pagan Cult teaching a revival/renaissance of an ancient mushroom ritual learned in Egypt by Moses and Christ, a mushroom religion known also to the Maya of ancient Mesoamerica, and around the world. The Manna-Book asks if this knowledge was kept secret by an elite caste of priests within the Kabalistic Jewish Rabbis until such a time as Christ came and taught it to the masses.

Exodus 16:14-24 indicates that MANNA was inevitably a MUSHROOM.
It was a small round thing in the morning dew, it bred larva, and would melt to mush if not dried. KING JAMES VERSION.
All mushroom pickers know that fly’s eggs cause larvae/worms in mushrooms. The one food most notorious for being full of worms.

Daniel 5:3-5 with Exodus 16:32 and Hebrews 9:4
indicates that the mushroom was a DRUG. After sacking the temple in Jerusalem and stealing the Ark-of-the-Covenant, the King of Babylon and his table drank from the golden cup containing the holy “MANNA” they had visions within the hour….. Psilocybin takes 30-40 minutes to induce visions.

Hebrews 9:4 makes it clear that MANNA was the most holy thing to Israelites, kept in A POT OF GOLD in the ARK OF THE COVENANT, in the MOST HOLY OF HOLYS. So sacred is the Manna that only the High Priest has access to it and only on one day of the year (Yom Kippur), which comes 3 days before the harvest moon (Hallows Eve).

Psalm 78:24-25 calls MANNA FOOD OF ANGELS, just as MAYAN/INCA PRIESTS from Meso-America called it TEONANACATL FOOD OF THE GODS.
MANNA is an Egyptian word, not Hebrew or Aramaic, meaning;
The BREAD OF GOD. This is what Moses called it in Exodus 16:15.
“Bread Of God” means “FOOD OF GOD”, which is the same meaning of TEONANACATL (Mayan), and AMBROSIA (Greek), and SOMA (Hindu) a word for mushroom tea, all these words mean “Spiritual Food”.
Coca and Tobacco Leaves found in Pharaohs tombs suggest it was ancestors of Mayan/Inca Priests who brought MUSHROOMS to Egypt.

John 2:6-9 indicates that Jesus made water into wine by boiling mushrooms (Mushroom-Tea), the waterpots were made of stone, not clay, (stone pots were used for cooking, clay pots used for storing water). These pots already contained 2-3 firkins of a substance before the pots were filled with water.
A “Firkin” is an Old-English measurement meaning a fourth part. Half to three-quarters of fresh mushrooms with water makes a potent tea. Tea is the safest way to consume field mushrooms, killing dangerous bacteria like E. Coli. In the Atharva Veda, the Hindus called this Tea SOMA. Greeks called mushroom jelly AMBROSIA.
Those who drank the water made into wine said it was the most potent intoxicant (St. John 2:10). The Bible tells us that Jesus making water into wine was the “beginning of miracles” … in other words no one saw any miracles until drinking the wine made from water. (St. John 2:11).

“MANA” is an EGYPTIAN WORD, not HEBREW or ARAMAIC, Meaning; “The BREAD OF GOD”. Moses, Christ, and Joseph, The favorite son of Israel, were all educated in Egypt. Solomon married Pharaoh’s daughter, and Abraham found his God at a place called SHECHEM (Sekhem), which is another Egyptian word for MANNA. TEONANACATL [Maya] = SOMA [Hindu] = AMBROSIA / BROMA-THEON [Greek] = MANNA [Egyptian/Hindu] It can be no coincidence that the MAYAN, EGYPTIAN, GREEK, HINDU, and ISRAELITE words for the mushroom all mean exactly the same thing: “THE BREAD OF GOD”.

MANNA was round, was found on the ground in the dew, would melt to mush if not dried or collected on time, and would breed larvae. All unique characteristics of mushrooms. When dried it was like “WAFERS OF BREAD” and it’s color was like “CORIANDER SEED”, the consistency and color of dried mushrooms, as described in Exodus Ch. 16.
Other psychedelics used in the Bible include, of course, Cannabis, Mandrake and others. This book focuses on Mushrooms: “The Global Sacrament”.
Be advised that the author does not advocate the non-ritual use of mushrooms or in any way place their importance above that of love, “Seek first the kingdom of love and all other things shall be added to you” [Christ].

Looking for Drinking Guide and Party Suggestions

Greetings everyone! My fiance and I are getting married in Boston on the 20th of July and I am I looking for suggestions regarding where we should go to party and have fun in the Boston area. We are all about good beer and friendly atmospheres. Live music in the Irish or acoustic vein would be good.

We are actually arriving on the 14th and will leave on the 22nd, so we will have many evenings where we will be looking for places to hang out and meet some new people. We would love to find a group of people to bar hop with or just hang out with any of the evenings we are in town.

If you are interested in being a party guide and would enjoy a few free beers, let me know. You can read more about me in my profile. My fiance is Mel - people.tribe.net/chasingjoy

Thank you in advance.

I made a swimming map (x-post, my apologies)

I'm x-posting this to all the Boston tribes. I hope that isn't tooooooo annoying. I apologize to those who have allergies to crossposting

Now that the weather is getting hot, it's time for beaches and swimming holes.

I started this Platial map of Places I know about close-ish to Boston for swimming.

Check it out: http://www.platial.com/tracy_the_astonishing/map/7166

One cool thing about the map is that you can add places to it without getting my permission. If you know of a great swim spot that isn't on the map, just add it. Don't send me directions, just click yourself a little marker right on the map. You can also comment on Places you've been to, add pictures, whatever.

I hope you enjoy it.

was it just me, or did it look as though Johnny was afraid of being shot while he was at that news conference puttin' on the stripes??? I've never seen anyone so nervous in front of a camera before.

Also - uhmm... not sure I get this - why is it perfectly OK for someone to move teams simply because of a bigger paycheck? I mean, no loyalty? I don't get this - I hear people screaming about how the owners needed to pay him more, but what the hell... is it just about the money? I'm eager to hear a reason that says it's not just about the money, but, Hmm.....

There are a TON of amazing Boston and MBTA maps mashed up with Googlemaps. I'm kind of map crazy these days, and since I'm moving to Boston (this Sunday - yay!), I've been keeping track of them in my del.icio.us links.

I hate to keep them all to myself:
http://del.icio.us/abbyladybug/boston+maps

I've also been creating a very JP-heavy Boston wiki just for fun. Feel free to partake of my obsessive cataloging!

http://wickedwiki.pbwiki.com/

The map page is the best part: http://wickedwiki.pbwiki.com/index.php?wiki=MBTA%20and%20Maps

I've also been bookmarking loads of just Boston sites with del.icio.us. There are some real gems in there:
http://del.icio.us/abbyladybug/boston

I know this is kind of spam-looking, but I don't get anything out of any of you using any of this stuff, so it really isn't! Just let me know if it's helpful or if you'd like to add to the Wiki.

I'll probably post this in the other Boston tribes I'm in, too.

I'm flying into Boston on September 6th right after Burning Man and I'm looking to wander around your city for the first time EVER....

will any of you provide a first timer some helpful information on the following:

Best places to crash - cheap is key - free is better ;)
Record Shops (Dj Vinyl)
Cafe's that I can hook my laptop up with WiFi
Best Local Food
Best Night Clubs - (Progressive House, Breaks or Tech House)
Best daytime activities
Best option to get around your city
Best option to get to New York and back

Now I gotta bug the New Yorkers with these same questions. Thanks for your time. If anyone in Boston is thinking about coming to San Francisco I would be happy to offer information etc....

Thanks!

Musical Theater Rampage Number One, Boston, Saturday July 16

Are you ready to rrrrrrumble? It is my distinct pleasure to announce the inaugural Guerilla Musical Theater Rampage.

Our embryonic website is here:

http://twilite.org/~firecat/guerillamusical

When: Saturday, July 16, high noon
Where: the Pit, in Harvard Sq.
Why: Oh come on, do you really have to ask?

It's noon, so those with evening plans can head out to those with no conflict. If you can not make it at noon, but would like to join us later on, please do let me know and we can make arrangements to meet somewhere in our travels. I will be carrying a sparkly oak tag sign that says "Guerilla Musical Theater" and there should be various beautiful freaks with me, some in colorful attire.

The Plan So Far

1. The Jets vs. the Sharks scene from West Side Story, on the T. Have us all get on the train, pretending not to know each other, and then two of our number stage an argument that looks real. "Hey you stepped on my foot," whatever. They appear to be really mad, but then they burst into song, and then all of the rest of us stand up and start snapping our fingers, "keep it cool...." (ED NOTE: With increased security on transportation, we probably need to NOT stage a fight, and we probably don't want to get up to any mischief on the T, ending the day arrested would really suck.... so the venue on this needs to change. Suggestions?)

2. "Suddenly Seymour."

3. Some of us have a deep affection for the Rainbow Connection song, which I share. I think that this might make an excellent number to perform for our grand finale in Downtown Crossing, Filene's basement. Think over the top, all the way into utter silliness, all of us draping clothes on our heads or dancing with props picked up from the shelves of the store, singing our little hearts out. "Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers and me...."

4. I know the Buffy Musical episode songs by heart, I'd really like to perform those. "I've Got a Theory" is a good group sing song, "Walk Through the Fire" has some good group action, etc.

Please pipe up with more suggestions! It's absolutely cool for anyone to take a solo, too, not all of our performances should be group ones, I know I've got some solo songs I'd like to do and I am sure some of the rest of you do, too. The musicals I am most familiar with are Sondheim, William Finn, Cats (rusty, but I knew it well, once), Moulin Rouge, Buffy Once More With Feeling, Muppet Movie, West Side Story, Little Shop of Horrors and probably a few others that I am forgetting.

It would be great if people had time to get together some night this week to try a dry run rehearsal, but if that does not work out, I think we can pull this off as a mostly improv performance for the first pass, everyone track down the music they need to learn and rehearse on your own. I will put up the MP3s I have somewhere on my website for folks to download, but I don't have any of the peer to peer MP3 searching tools, so if someone does, they might want to volunteer to help me track down all the music we need.

Yippee! I can't wait. Viva La Musical Revolucion. ;)

Why is it that they cant fucking mix the damn sugar in an ice coffee? Come on how hard is it to fucking stick a spoon in something and stir it or at least fucking put the lid on tight and shake it over a fucking sink? I am really mad about this I fucking have to pay for the damn coffee and then pay to have my car washed because the coffee leaks all over the side of the car when I shake it out the window.

Sugar melts in hot fluids not in cold ones so all you dumb fucks at dunkin doughnuts need to learn this and the skill of mixing before I ever get coffee from you again.

Because, if so, I'm going to start the conversation with the following (and please answer them):

1.) Didja grow up here?
2.) Ever tried to order (ordah?) a large fries from Kelly's Roast Beef?
3.) Ever been able to finish aforementioned large fries?
4.) Know of a pub crawl in the Boston area you go on?
5.) Ever ride the Swan Boats?
6.) Parking on the street: luxury or birthright?
7.) King is to Archbishop of Canterbury as X is to Red Line?
8.) Varitek, Nomah, or Williams for Soul of the Red Sox?
9.) Harpoon or Sam Adams?

Mise En Place stuns them at the American Massage Therapy Associations' annual luncheon. Best comment: "This is the best dressing I've ever had in my life!" (Balsamic vin, with fresh thyme, dijon, shallots, garlic).
Our favorite: Vegan split pea soup with roasted sweet potato and fresh ginger, out of this world and easy to make!
email thethinchef@yahoo.com for the recipe.

I went to the Stone Zoo today

It was the zoo I went to when I was a little sweet kind loving child, but that ’s neither hear nor there. Anyhow it was awful, the poor animals were miserable. Their cages were so small and it was for the most part one animal to a cage and most animals are social and live in tribes and packs. The animals just lay there with bugs crawling all over them awaiting a death that will not come soon enough. The ones who were not just waiting for death to take them were walking around and around their paws wearing into the ground because they walk in the same path every time and must do it about 10,000 times a day.

I love animals and I keep lots of pets (2 rabbits, 2 cats, 2 dogs and a fish tank) but all my animals are very healthy, happy, cared for and loved. Also I am not one who would be an advocate for putting an otherwise healthy animal to sleep but if I had a gun I would have shot every animal I saw today just because that would be the most loving thing that could have happened to any of those animals.

here is a link to their website www.zoonewengland.org

Yes, Sunday's big game was the 18th regular season win in a row for the NE Patriots! That's the record that the NFL will keep.

And the 5-0 Pats move ahead of the 5-0 Jets too!

Am I the only one who really couldn't give a damn about the Red Sox?

I suppose I kinda cared once, but when a guy who is making $90,000,000.00 goes on strike for more money... I dunno, I lost ALL interest in baseball after that. (please note: I think the NHL is trying to tell me to invest my attention elsewhere now)

Okay, it's also that damnable irritating "cowboy up" catchphrase.

I became rather inflamed last night as I was driving along Rt. 16 and came across some rather awful holes in the rode. Damn!! It is nearly impossible to miss all the potholes one comes upon in a day. What really sucks is that now one of my wheels makes a rather unpleasant scraping sound when I make a tight turn. SUCKY!!!

Hi everyone...yay a place where I can be nostalgic about my favorite city! I didn't live in Boston, but all around it: Easton, Mansfield, Cohasset...love it in MA...then after college something happened and I kept moving south...first baltimore, now N. Virginia and I miss my boston baby so bad...can anyone get me a job there?! :-)

I'll be there for the 4th so I can't wait...it is way too hot here, but I agree with some former bostonians, I have become such a wuss to the cold since moving down "south." I love how life stops here when there is a dusting of snow...it's crazy.

On eating at a restaurant opened for a group on New Years Day in Boston.
It was in the early to mid '70s and called 'Monsieur Robert' in
old city hall's basement.
Is this correct?
Ask your parents perhaps?
Any write-ups, is it still there (fat chance?), how long did it last?
